John Henry offers lifeline to Liverpool FC misfits

David Ngog and Alberto Aquilani were today given hope of reviving their ailing Liverpool careers by owner John Henry.

Aquilani, returning to Anfield after a season-long loan with Juventus, provided an assist for Ngog as the Reds ran out 6-3 winners against a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

But the Italian's prospects have been bleakened further by the arrival of midfielders Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam during the transfer window and the likes of Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles and Jay Spearing all ahead of him in the pecking order.

A return to his native Serie A continues to be touted but as yet no suitors have been found whilst back-up striker Ngog saw his proposed move to Sunderland falling through last month.

The duo cost the club a combined transfer fee of £18.6million and are likely to be moved on as Kenny Dalglish looks to trim his squad of the deadwood accumulated by his predecessors.

Henry, however, has hailed the pair's impact on Liverpool's pre-season tour of the Far East, giving fresh hope to the out-of-favour duo that they futures may still lie with the club.

"One missing link last year: Acquilani (sic),' he said on Twitter.

"Put the ball near Ngog and the goal and it's going in.

"Too much talk of them somewhere else."
