Raul Meireles responds to 'Judas' accusations

Raul Meireles has refuted suggestion that he left Liverpool for financial gain.

The midfielder joined Chelsea in a £12million deal on transfer deadline day, after the Reds revealed half an hour before the window closed that he had submitted a transfer request.

Meireles is currently sidelined with a collarbone injury but had already found himself further down the midfield pecking order at Anfield following an influx of players during the close season.

But the 28-year-old insists that money was not a factor in his move to Stamford Bridge and maintains that he was not solely culpable for the departure.

"These are things that happen in football," he told RTPN.

"I can only say good things about Liverpool, it was a fantastic year

"People think I am a Judas and that it was because of the money.

"It was not because of that, I will explain it later, things are still fresh.

"It all happened very fast. I am not the only one to blame for my exit from Liverpool.

"But I will never stop loving the club and I have great friends there."
