Kenny Dalglish and his opposite number Neil Warnock were both full of praise for Luis Suarez after his match-winning performance against QPR.

The Uruguay forward scored the only goal of the game to ensure the newspapers will make happier reading than they did following defeat at Fulham earlier in the week which brought two FA charges.

Dalglish reflected: "The headlines don't matter, do they? But there'll be nice headlines for him tomorrow. He scored with a header, which doesn't happen too often, and he played really well."

QPR boss Warnock followed his counterpart into the press room and added: "I think Suarez looked amazing today.

"Oh to manage him."

On the performance as a whole, Dalglish felt his players were worthy winners.

"Some of the football we played was brilliant in the first half," he said.

"We will continue doing what we're doing. We cannot change our beliefs.

"It was an excellent performance, we made a lot of chances, we got one goal and they never got any. Three points for us - the points tally is no less than we deserved but maybe the goals tally was. But one is enough when the other team don't get an opportunity.

"The players showed great courage and belief to continue what we've been doing, and that's pass and move, get into the box and create chances - one day we're going to take them."

Warnock was in agreement that Liverpool deserved to take all three points.

"They pass it around for fun," he said. "The players they've got, they're going to cause any team a problem.

"They were the better side. Most people in the ground might have thought we'd go four or five down but we showed great resolve."

Liverpool were in a state of indignation last night after the Football Association charged their striker Luis Suarez with improper conduct over what appeared to be an indecent gesture towards Fulham fans on Monday night and also deemed the club guilty of failing to control its players during their 1-0 defeat.

Liverpool's manager, Kenny Dalglish, will be asked for his reaction at his weekly press conference today and it may be incendiary, given that Suarez is already facing an FA charge over alleged racist abuse towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra during the clubs' match at Anfield in October – another charge which Liverpool have rejected.

The FA's governance and regulation committee, which analysed images taken from Fulham's Putney End, have concluded that the Uruguayan did raise the middle finger of his left hand to home fans who had subjected him to abuse during the defeat. The additional decision to charge Liverpool with "failing to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion, following the dismissal of Jay Spearing", stems from the way in which the referee, Kevin Friend, was surrounded by Martin Skrtel, Charlie Adam, Craig Bellamy and Glen Johnson after Spearing's fateful 72nd-minute challenge on Moussa Dembele.

Luis Suarez charged with improper conduct

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been charged with improper conduct following an alleged gesture he made towards Fulham fans on Monday night, the Football Association have announced.

The incident was captured by photographers as the Uruguayan left the pitch at the end of Liverpool's 1-0 defeat, and he has until 4pm on Monday to respond to the charge.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been charged by the FA with failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion following the controversial sending-off of Jay Spearing in the second half.

Liverpool's players reacted angrily after Spearing was shown a straight red card by referee Kevin Friend for a tackle on Moussa Dembele in the 72nd minute.

The club, who have opted not to appeal against the decision, also have until 4pm on Monday to decide whether they will contest the charge.

A short statement on Liverpool's website tonight read: "Liverpool FC today received notification from the Football Association of their decision to charge both the club and Luis Suarez following the game against Fulham.

The midfielder attended hospital for tests, the results of which will be known in the next couple of days. Until then, Gerrard will be left to wonder about the severity of the infection. The Liverpool captain could be out of action for up to two months after suffering an infection which flared up his right ankle on the eve of his side's trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Gerrard came through last weekend's 1-1 draw with Norwich unscathed but missed the Reds' win at the Hawthorns on Saturday night due to recovering from surgery in hospital.

As a result, he faces a potential four weeks on the sidelines before he can return to training as he bids to put his career back on track after an injury-hit six months.

Gerrard has spent large parts of 2011 struggling with a groin problem which required two rounds of corrective surgery before an infection sidelined him for an additional two months.

Charlie Adam hailed fellow goalscorer Andy Carroll's display as 'unbelievable' - but claimed the Reds as a whole still needed to improve despite a deserved 2-0 win at West Bromwich Albion. Adam calmly slotted into the net from the penalty spot early in the game before Carroll secured the points with a low drill beyond Ben Foster.

Our Scottish midfielder was full of praise for record signing Carroll, whose link up with Luis Suarez caused havoc for Roy Hodgson's defence. "The big man has been unbelievable today and the finish for our second goal was terrific," he said.

"Once we got the goal it changed the complexion of the game. I thought we played well in the first half. Second half, we never kept the ball as well as we should have and it's something that we'll maybe have to get better at. But to come here and get three points has delighted us.

"We're disappointed with some of the results we've had this year. Last week (v Norwich) we had numerous chances and could have finished it off but that's what happens when you play in the best league in the world. If you don't score you can get punished, and we did. We've done that a couple of times this year but today we've started the game very well and deserved to win the game in the end."

Carroll himself was delighted to get on the scoresheet - and saved a word of praise for Suarez, who was felled for the penalty before creating our second goal. "He's fantastic, you can see," said Carroll. "He creates chances for everyone and obviously puts them away himself. He's fantastic to have in the team.

Steven Gerrard is hoping to make his Liverpool comeback in the next fortnight.

The Reds captain will resume full training next week with the target of returning to first-team action during their Premier League encounter with Tottenham on September 18.

A groin problem confined Gerrard to the sidelines in March, after playing through the pain barrier against Manchester United, and underwent a series of procedures to correct the problem.

He had originally hoped to return to action in last month's pre-season friendly with Valencia but an infection suffered as a result of the surgeries saw those plans shelved.

But despite the setback, Gerrard has revealed that he has made great progress during his rehabilitation period

Raul Meireles has refuted suggestion that he left Liverpool for financial gain.

The midfielder joined Chelsea in a £12million deal on transfer deadline day, after the Reds revealed half an hour before the window closed that he had submitted a transfer request.

Meireles is currently sidelined with a collarbone injury but had already found himself further down the midfield pecking order at Anfield following an influx of players during the close season.

The Portuguese midfielder was withdrawn after just 20 minutes of the Reds' Carling Cup second round win over Exeter City, nursing his shoulder following a challenge with Danny Coles.

Nacional vice-president Hector Olmes has confirmed that the club have received an offer from Liverpool for Sebastian Coates and said he expects the centre-back to move to Anfield.

Coates, 20, revealed on Tuesday that his future would be decided by the end of the week, claiming "a lot of teams are interested in me".

Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk have also been linked to a move for the Uruguay defender, who impressed during the Celeste's recent Copa America triumph.

But Nacional vice president Olmes has confirmed the Liverpool bid - thought to be around £8 million - has them in pole position to sign Coates and the player's father and agent, Peter, is reportedly heading to Merseyside to discuss personal terms with the Reds.

"The offer is very good. Surely Coates will go to Liverpool," Olmes replied when asked about Liverpool's interest.

And Coates himself has talked up the prospect of linking up with international team-mate Luis Suarez at Anfield.

"It's a club with great history and tradition in England," he told Ovacion. "Also, Luis [Suarez] would be a great help to me there. The offer suits all concerned, so it's fair to say it's a done deal."

Asked if he would prefer Liverpool to City, he said: "Yes. I would have to wait to see what City offer, but I think the presence of Luis would be very important in my decision. I have spoken to him - he contacted me and we chatted for quite a while.

Once again, Liverpool saw that they can always rely on Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan's impact since arriving at Anfield at the end of the January transfer window has lifted Kenny Dalglish's side far more than Fernando Torres ever could in his prime.

Suarez not only brings goalscoring ability to the table, but also an abundance of creativity.

Arsenal were on the receiving end of this dual threat last Saturday and tonight it was the turn of Exeter City to face his wrath during a 59-minute exhibition of his talents.

It was no coincidence that all three of Liverpool's goals were either scored or manufactured by Suarez with his opener against the Grecians signalling a prolific third goal in as many games.

QPR manager Neil Warnock has cooled talk of a move Joe Cole.

On Monday, the Premier League newcomers' boss predicted that they could "probably afford 30 or 40 per cent" of the Liverpool midfielder's wages following their takeover by Tony Fernandez last week.

But now Warnock is distancing himself from talks of landing Cole, who has been a long-term target, and Tottenham striker Peter Crouch, insisting that he has only enquired for West Ham's Scott Parker.

The 20-year-old scooped the Best Young Player accolade at this summer's Copa America, when he featured alongside Reds' striker Luis Suarez in Uruguay's triumphant campaign.

He was expected to secure a move to FC Porto after a proposed move to São Paulo collapsed earlier this summer but the Premier League now appears his most likely destination.

Both Liverpool and City have retained interest in Coates while Arsenal are understood to have previously considered the centre-back in a bid to bolster their struggling defence.

Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's owners, have bankrolled Kenny Dalglish's Anfield revolution to the tune of over £105million and Coates's arrival is expected to add up to £12million to the figure.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos has joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer.

A move to the Bundesliga has looked likely for the defender despite being turned down by Hamburg back in June, shortly before he was handed a 12-month extension by Liverpool.

The 32-year-old earned an additional year with the Reds after making enough appearances last season to trigger the extension clause, agreed at his arrival from AEK Athens in 2009.

But Kyrgiakos, who netted in the Reds' final pre-season friendly against Valencia, opted for a move to Wolfsburg, who have been actively seeking a replacement for the outgoing Simon Kjaer.

Jamie Carragher remains the first-choice centre-back while Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel remain in competition to partner him at the heart of Kenny Dalglish's defence.

Dalglish, meanwhile, has paid tribute to Dirk Kuyt amidst rumours of him being linked with a move to Inter MIlan after comments made by his agent last year resurfaced this morning.

The Holland international had been tipped to join the Serie A giants 12 months ago to link up with former Reds manager Rafael Benitez but the move never materialised.

Kenny Dalglish's clearout of his Liverpool squad is set to continue with striker David Ngog on the verge of joining Bolton Wanderers and Philipp Degen a target for Queens Park Rangers.

The 22-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield this summer, and is now closing in on a £4m switch to the Reebok Stadium.

Trotters boss Owen Coyle has been desperate to add a striker to his squad all summer long, and having missed out on Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge, has identified Ngog as his ideal solution.

Coyle admitted after his side's 4-0 win over QPR on Saturday that he was in the market for a forward, despite the addition of Turkish star Tuncay last week.

Talks concerning Ngog have been ongoing for the past two weeks, and a fee is now close to being agreed.

West Ham have also expressed an interest, but a move to Bolton could take place before the Trotters' clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

Ngog's departure, however, will not have any bearing on a potential Liverpool bid for Wanderers defender Gary Cahill.

The 25-year-old has been persistently linked with a move away from the Reebok this summer, with Liverpool, along with Arsenal and Tottenham, listed as possible suitors.

Yet though Dalglish is keen to sign an additional central defender, Bolton's £15m asking price for Cahill - another player with just one year left on his contract - is unlikely to be met.

Dalglish remains eager to trim the club's wage bill before making any further signings, with the likes of Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen, Emiliano Insua and Alberto Aquilani all linked with moves away from Merseyside.

Another player set for the Anfield exit is Degen, with Neil Warnock keen to take the Swiss defender to newly-promoted QPR.

Kenny Dalglish is refusing to believe that the crisis currently engulfing Arsenal will give his Liverpool side any advantage when the sides face each other this weekend.

The Reds take on the Gunners for Saturday's lunchtime kick off against a backdrop of conflict, with Samir Nasri expected to follow Cesc Fabregas out the exit door at the Emirates Stadium.

Fabregas secured a return to Barcelona on Monday following years of wrangling between the European champions and the Arsenal hierarchy, who were reluctant to let their captain leave.

Nasri's proposed move to Manchester City appears a mere formality while Arsene Wenger's side has also been decimated by injuries and suspension following last weekend's draw at Newcastle.

The NextGen Series promises to offer the Reds' current crop of youngsters the opportunity to showcase their true abliities against their counterparts in both England and abroad.

But Rodolfo Borrell's side were unable to break down this impressive Sporting Lisbon team.

Two of Liverpool's best known academy graduates in Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher watched from the sidelines in the hope that the next generation will follow in their footsteps.

Sporting's most famous exports may not have been in attendance, but their current crop have an equally difficult task in stepping out of the shadows of Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo.

Yet they remained undaunted and took full advantage of the opportunity to break the deadlock through Joao Teixeira, who stunned the Kop after a neat one-two with Alberto Coelho.

Coelho followed up on his assist with Sporting's second after Carlos Chaby and Iuri Medeiros displayed a great understanding to expose Liverpool's defence again before teeing him up.

It was an unfair reflection of the period since the breakthrough when Liverpool had began to enjoy their share of chances, through some increasingly familiar names.

The electricity that encapsulated the stadium before the game against Sunderland and indeed throughout the first half was not reserved for the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Alhough they will refute the suggestions, many Liverpool fans were guilty of allowing their heart to rule their head on the back of 45 minutes of high-tempo, attacking football.

They allowed memories of Kenny Dalglish's first term as manager to cloud their judgement and overlook the contrasting circumstances in which he returned to the position.

When he arrived in the dugout in 1985, he did so inheriting a successful side which had swept virtually all before them both on the domestic and continental fronts.

His predecessors were names that have become synonymous with Liverpool's decades of dominance which he would later join; Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan.

Coupled with this was the backing of an astute and long-serving hierarchy from the owners to the chief executive, who helped pave the way for this legendary Anfield dynasty.

However Dalglish's reappointment was not the continuation of a long line of successful Liverpool managers, after Roy Hodgson's tenure had cast further doom upon the club.

Kenny Dalglish has warned that Liverpool should not be judged on their pre-season exploits.

Valencia travel to Anfield for tomorrow's final friendly ahead of next weekend's opening day visit of Sunderland, with the hosts' defence under slight scrutiny for leaking goals.

The Reds have shipped three goals in each of their five warm-up fixtures this summer, which included back-to-back defeats against Hull City and Galatasaray respectively.

Dalglish admits that his preparations for the new season have been far from ideal but does not feel that Liverpool's summer schedule is a reliable yardstick of his side's true abilities.

"We could have been better but we've had a lot of people coming in at various times," he admitted.

"Everybody that's been with us has got a reasonable amount of time on the pitch because they've all trained really well.

"They need a bit of reward for what they've done in training and then we've got to assess what we need for ourselves going forward and we'll do that.

"We're getting closer to the Sunderland game so we'll get closer to narrowing the squad down a little and being more selective, but we've given everybody an opportunity to try and impress."

He added: "It's a quality team that's coming over in Valencia.

Martin Skrtel is facing up to the prospect of missing the start of Liverpool's season.

The Slovakian played every minute of last season's Premier League campaign but has yet to feature for the Reds in pre-season action on account of an ongoing calf problem.

Skrtel has now been withdrawn from his country's international friendly with Austria next week due to a fresh injury setback and remains a doubt for next weekend's visit of Sunderland to Anfield.

"I suffered an injury setback on Friday," he revealed.

"I felt strong pain in my leg so I am back with the doctors receiving treatment.

"I really don't know how long will it take to heal.

"I am doing my best to be back as soon as possible."

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was greeted by wife Alex and kids today as he was discharged from hospital.

Looking a little tired, the Reds ace went home with his family after spending the last few days in Spire Hospital.

The 31-year-old England international was found to have an infection in his groin, an area he had surgery on last season.

Stewart Downing is on the verge of becoming a Liverpool player after Aston Villa agreed a deal to secure his move to Anfield.

It is understood that the Reds, who have been actively pursuing a deal since the end of last season, have met the original £20million valuation set by Villa owner Randy Lerner for the winger in a bid to stave off interest but tonight the two sides finally reached an agreement.

However it was only after Downing submitted a written transfer request that a deal was struck.

"I can confirm that we have reached an agreement with Liverpool following an improved offer received earlier today and the submission of a formal transfer request by Stewart Downing, and have subsequently given them permission to speak with the player," said Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner.

Damien Comolli, the Reds' director of football, will press ahead over the next 48 hours in an attempt to add Adam to the recent capture of Jordan Henderson. A meeting with Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston is booked, and Liverpool hope to conclude an £8 million transfer.

The Anfield club initially lodged a similar bid in January, only to find the Tangerines holding out for £12 million. Oyston had hoped Adam would keep his club in the Premier League, but now he is left on weaker ground to barter, with the Scotland international desperate to stay in England's top flight.

The most likely scenario to scupper Liverpool's plans would be a last-ditch hijack attempt from Aston Villa, whose new boss Alex McLeish used to work with Adam at Rangers. Blackpool would hope a rival bid would drive up Liverpool's offer, which is expected to start as low as £6.5 million.

Adam is one of a handful of players wanted by Kenny Dalglish, who also has Comolli negotiating for Ipswich's Connor Wickham, Arsenal's Gael Clichy, and Aston's Villa's Stewart Downing. Downing is understood to be on his way to Anfield if the Reds are able to meet the £19 million asking price for the winger. It is believed that new boss Alex McLeish is reluctant to lose the England international, but with recent contract talks at Villa Park stalling, the club may be prepared to take accept a transfer fee and move instead for Charles N'Zogbia from Wigan.

McLeish earlier told the Birmingham Mail that while he was resigned to losing Ashley Young to Manchester United, he was still interested in keeping Downing.

"He is a top player," said McLeish. "He has got a couple of years left on his contract and it is very important that we hold on to Stewart. I want Stewart to stay. I saw his statement. I'll have a go at talking to Stewart and see what happens.

However it is believed that the Merseyside club are favourites to land the winger. Kop boss Dalglish and the clubs director of football Damien Comolli are both admirers of Jeffren and feel he could be the creative spark needed to provide chances for strikers Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.

Currently on international duty with the Spain Under 21's in Denmark for the European Under-21 Championships, Jeffren told RAC1: "It is clear that I do not like the idea of leaving Barcelona for Udinese.

"I have spent the past seven years at Barcelona and it was my dream to succedd here.

"I don't think I will make it here, though, and it looks like I have to start looking elsewhere."

Jeffren only has one year remaining on his current deal at the Nou Camp and and it is believed he has an £8.3million release clause in his contract which Liverpool are looking to trigger.

Liverpool defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has earned himself a 12-month contract extension at Anfield. The former Greece international, 32 next month, originally joined on a two-year deal from AEK Athens at the start of the 2009-10 season. However, written into that agreement was an option for a further year and Kyrgiakos has qualified for that having played the required number of matches last season.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is keen to acquire the signature of Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago when the summer transfer window opens for business.

Gago who signed for Real in 2007 from Boca Juniors for €20.4million has made 92 appearances for the Spanish giants.

However Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has told the 25-year-old he can leave the Bernabeu in the summer after making only seven appearances for the club in all competitions last season.

Reina ready for pre-season after successful surgery in Germany

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is expected to be fit for the start of pre-season training after undergoing surgery on a double hernia. The Spain international had the operation on Thursday in Munich, having been accompanied to Germany by the national team doctor Juan Jose Garcia Cota. Reina played every minute of all 38 Barclays Premier League matches last season and the surgery had been planned by Liverpool prior to him joining up with Spain at the end of the domestic season.

"SIASAT segera sebelum ia merebak." Itulah kata-kata pertama terbit daripada mulut Mohd Azrai Khor Abdullah selepas mendengar perkhabaran terbaru betapa mungkin ada unsur rasuah dalam skuad Liga Super Negeri Sembilan.

“Saya setuju jika siasatan dibuat ke atas skuad negeri dan memang wajar ia disiasat segera,’ kata ketua jurulatih skuad Hoben Jang Hoben itu, semalam.

Dia menambah: “Ada lebih baik PBNS (Persatuan Bola Sepak Negeri Sembilan) bertindak awal sebelum gejala ini - jika benar wujud - merebak ke dalam pasukan.

“Walaupun belum ada sebarang bukti berkaitan isu ini tindakan diambil ketika ini betul dan positif.”

Semalam, Presiden PBNS, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan turut menyuarakan pandangan betapa ada kemungkinan unsur negatif itu wujud dalam skuad Liga Super negeri yang disifatkan olehnya “sekejab menang, sekejab kalah” dan dia sendiri amat mengharapkan tiada rasuah terbabit.

Isu panas ini timbul selepas pengurus skuad Piala Presiden, Bahari Abd Rahman dan Setiausaha Kehormat PBNS, Datuk Abd Halim Abd Latif membuat laporan polis di Balai Polis Seremban 2, semalam selepas mendapat bukti kemungkinan gejala rasuah melanda skuad remaja negeri berkenaan.
Tampaknya, ‘gelora ganas’ yang pernah mencipta aib besar pada 1995, gara-gara rasuah seperti mahu kembali menghantui semula Persatuan Bola Sepak Malaysia (FAM).

Anehnya, hanya seminggu lalu, FAM memberi amaran keras kepada pemain dan pegawai betapa hukuman berat bakal menunggu mereka andai terbabit dalam rasuah mengatur keputusan perlawanan di Liga Malaysia.

Ia berlaku sejurus selepas lawatan Ketua pegawai Keselamatan Persekutuan Bola Sepak Antarabangsa (FIFA), Chris Eaton ke Kuala Lumpur pada 19 Mei lalu apabila Timbalan Presiden FAM, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah berkata pemain dan pegawai yang terbabit dalam rasuah akan dikenakan hukuman berat.

Sementara itu, ketika diajukan persoalan mengenai status pemain serta pengurusan pasukan Piala Presiden, Mohamad berkata sebarang hukuman atau tindakan akan dilakukan sebaik pihak polis selesai menjalankan siasatan.

Selepas mengharungi 18 perlawanan, skuad negeri sudah mengumpul 20 mata untuk berada di tangga ketujuh Kumpulan B.

Liverpool FC is delighted to announce the Club will be travelling to Asia this summer for a pre-season tour sponsored by Standard Chartered that will include games in China, Malaysia and Korea.
The Reds enjoy fantastic support in Asia and this summer's visit follows the hugely successful 10-day pre-season tour of Thailand and Singapore in 2009.

The team will take on opposition in Guangzhou, play a game in Kuala Lumpur, and then move to Seoul for the final fixture of the three-match tour in July.

Harry Redknapp has revealed Spurs are in a three-way fight with Arsenal and Liverpool to sign Scott Parker. The Tottenham chief has also confirmed his interest in highly-rated Lille winger Eden Hazard and admits he will sit down with chairman Daniel Levy to sign "one or two strong characters" this summer.

LIVERPOOL - Pengurus Liverpool, Kenny Dalglish semalam menegaskan, dia hanya akan terlibat dalam pasaran perpindahan pemain pada musim panas ini jika prospek pemain yang hendak dibeli adalah lebih bagus daripada pemain yang sedia ada.

Skuad Reds pada awalnya dijangka turut aktif apabila pasaran perpindahan dibuka selepas berbelanja besar - 57.8 juta pound (RM283 juta) ketika mendapatkan Luis Suarez dan Andy Carroll, Januari lalu.

Liverpool will be asked to improve Raul Meireles' contract this summer, less than a year after he joined the club on a four-year deal from Porto. The Portugal midfielder was signed as a late £11.7m replacement after Javier Mascherano left for Barcelona last summer. IT was a moment which symbolised just how far Lucas Leiva has come. As he cradled his baby son Pedro Lucas in his arms on the traditional lap of honour at Anfield last Sunday, he stopped off in front of the Kop for a special presentation.
The Brazil international was crowned Liverpool’s Player of the Year by members of the popular internet forum Red All Over The Land. A poll on the site which is known as ‘The Rattle’ saw the midfielder land 75% of the votes and he’s now the proud owner of a golden adidas samba which supporters had mounted on a plinth.
It meant a great deal to the 24-year-old who has had to fight so hard to win over the club’s supporters since his £5million switch from Gremio in 2007. “It was a really important day for me,” Lucas said. “Of course I was a bit disappointed after the game because of the defeat but I was really proud to receive that award.
“I have it on display in my house. To get a trophy from the Kop means a lot and I must thank the fans for all their support. It’s been a very good season for me. I’m looking forward to helping the team keep improving next season and hopefully I can make the fans happy again.”
Last summer Lucas feared his days at Anfield were numbered. He was told if the Reds received a suitable offer he would be allowed to leave. However, no bids were accepted and he knuckled down, determined to prove his critics wrong. Over the past nine months he has done that emphatically. He has risen to the challenge following the departure of Javier Mascherano and been a model of consistency at the heart of the Reds’ midfield.
The boos he had to deal with during a tough start to his Liverpool career have been consigned to history and he’s guaranteed a warm reception from the travelling support in Sunday’s final game of the season at Aston Villa. “I think it shows how in football things can change very quickly,” he said. “I know how hard I worked to be in this position. I wanted to prove I could be an important player for the team.
“I feel comfortable with the way I’m playing. I’m trying to show my qualities and take more responsibility. It’s great when you feel like you are important and a key player. I’ve had to take on responsibility and sometimes that’s helpful for a player. I have to try to keep the same level of performance. Hopefully we will start next season much better than we started this season and keep it going throughout the season.”
It’s been a whirlwind few months for Lucas. His progress on the pitch was rewarded in March with a new long-term contract and the deal was signed shortly after the birth of his son. He’s loving fatherhood and two-month-old Pedro Lucas will have his first trip home to South America next week when his dad begins preparations for the Copa America.
Lucas was named in a 28-man Brazil squad yesterday for friendlies against Holland and Romania on June 4 and 7. They are warm-up games for the prestigious tournament in Argentina which gets underway on July 1.
Some days can be hard with the baby but I’m really happy,” he said. “He’s growing really well and I’m looking forward to taking him home to Brazil. One day hopefully I’ll be watching him play. He’s been very lucky because he’s already been to a few games at Anfield. The Tottenham game was his first defeat. For sure he will be going to a lot of matches here next season and will grow up as a Liverpool fan.
“I’ll have a few days off next week and then be involved with Brazil. Hopefully I’ll be selected for the Copa America. I’ll give everything for my country and then come back here hungry to win titles with Liverpool.”
Lucas was one of the Reds’ best performers during the trouble reign of Roy Hodgson but since Kenny Dalglish took over in January his form has improved further. He believes he owes a debt of gratitude to Dalglish. "Kenny has changed the whole atmosphere in the club,” he said.
“Everyone can see we are playing well and the spirit in the team is really good. Kenny has helped all of us. We know he’s a really important person for the club and the fans are really happy because he has signed a new contract. For everything he has done, he really deserves that contract. All the players are looking forward to working with him over the coming years.”
Lucas was speaking at the Liverpool FC ‘Goals 4 All’ Community Day held at Goals Soccer Centre in Speke. He chatted with children and adults involved in a variety of the Reds’ community activities, including a group from St Vincent’s School for Blind and Partially Sighted Children. Lucas got involved in the session and took a penalty blindfolded, finding the bottom corner.
“It’s the first time I’ve done that and it’s really difficult,” he said. “It shows how hard these people work to play football. It’s really important the club help the community and it’s great to spend some time with these kids. LIVERPOOL – Pengurus Liverpool, Kenny Dalglish berjanji tidak akan mensia-siakan kualiti yang dimiliki beberapa bintang muda skuad The Reds yang dilihat makin mempamerkan peningkatan sejak kebelakangan ini.
Terdahulu, Dalglish melahirkan rasa kagumnya terhadap corak permainan yang dipamerkan dua bintang muda Liverpool, Jack Robinson dan John Flanagan yang diturunkan dalam kesebelasan utama ekoran masalah kecederaan yang melanda beberapa tonggak utama mereka.Kekebalan Robinson yang beraksi di pertahanan tengah telah membantu skuad The Reds mengikat Arsenal seri 1-1 pada aksi Liga Perdana England, Ahad lalu.Manakala Flanagan menarik perhatian Dalglish ketika menewaskan Manchester City 3-0 dua minggu lalu.
Kedua-dua pemain tersebut dijangka sekali lagi bakal berada dalam kesebelasan utama Liverpool pada pertemuan menentang Birmingham City di Anfield malam ini.Bagaimanapun, Dalglish turut menyuarakan kembimbangannya terhadap peningkatan yang dipamerkan Robinson dan Flanagan itu kerana khuatir sekiranya kedua- dua pemain tersebut gagal mengekalkan tahap konsisten mereka.“Kami (Liverpool) memang kagum dengan apa yang telah mereka pamerkan ditambah pula ketika pertemuan menentang dua kelab besar seperti Arsenal dan City.“Kami hanya berharap mereka dapat terus mengekalkannya, namun dalam masa yang sama kami tidak mahu memusnahkan karier kedua-duanya.
“Kami perlu sedar bahawa mereka masih muda dan mungkin kami perlu memberi mereka rehat sekiranya itu yang mereka mahukan.
“Kami perlu memantau perkembangan mereka dari semasa ke semasa kerana kami perlu meneruskan rentak kecemerlangan kami dalam saingan liga,” kata Dalglish.

LONDON - Penjaga gol Liverpool, Pepe Reina menyuarakan keinginannya untuk terus kekal di Anfield musim depan.
Reina, 28, berkata, skuad The Reds sudah cukup bersedia untuk memenangi trofi tahun depan.Masa depan penjaga gol Sepanyol itu mencetuskan spekulasi dan dia dilihat tidak berpuas hati dengan persembahan Liverpool pada awal musim ini.

NEGERI Sembilan yang kembali mendapat keyakinan baru selepas mengutip satu mata dengan Harimau Muda A Selasa lalu, bertekad menebus kekalahan yang dialami apabila berdepan FELDA United, di Stadium KLFA Cheras, malam ini.
Ketua jurulatihnya, Mohd Azraai Abdullah sudah merangka strategi mantap termasuk menyenaraikan barisan pemain terbaik untuk berdepan pasukan kelab itu dalam memastikan kemenangan sekalipun mengakui bakal berdepan tugas mencabar di gelanggang lawan.

Menurutnya, kehadiran semula penyerang harapan, Hairuddin Omar, dalam pasukan selepas tidak beraksi pada dua perlawanan akibat penggantungan, diyakini memantapkan lagi kekuatan barisan depan yang sebelum ini terpaksa bergantung kepada dua penyerang muda skuad Piala Presiden, Mohd Fiqri Adwan dan Mohd Khairul Ridzuan.

Liverpool akan singkir Joe Cole?

Pemain tengah, Joe Cole akan dilepaskan dari Liverpool pada musim panas ini.
Bekas perancang utama England itu, bergelut untuk melakukan impak di Anfield sejak dibawa masuk secara percuma dari Chelsea Julai lalu.
Cole, 29, hanya diturunkan dalam lapan aksi liga musim ini dan The Reds bersedia melepaskan bintang yang bergaji 100,000 pound (RM500,000) seminggu itu bagi mengurangkan tanggungan.
Sumber Liverpool berkata, keputusan tersebut mungkin kurang adil kepada Cole kerana dia sememangnya seorang pemain hebat.
"Namun, segalanya tidak berjalan lancar untuknya di sini. Kenny (Dalglish) sedang membina semula pasukan Liverpool dengan kemasukan Andy Caroll dan Luis Suarez dan dia dijangka akan membeli lebih ramai pemain pada musim panas.
"Malangnya, ini bermakna Joe akan menjadi kelebihan daripada yang diperlukan," jelas sumber itu.
